Chapter 19 – Reunion

Kat's class joined the rest of her year group in the large sports hall for their first Genetic Deviation assembly of the year. The rain could be heard hammering on the metal roof of the sports hall, Kat hoped it would drown out the sound of whatever was planned for this assembly, but she was sure that the school would ensure that every single word was heard. This assembly was mainly a focus for the school years that were having their tests done that year, but all children had to go to one at least once a year to keep the information fresh in their minds.

Two guards were standing at the front of the hall, dressed the same as the armed guards that Kat and Jack had seen at the test centre. They had not brought along their weapons on this day, however. They stood on either side of a man in a black suit. He stood with his hands behind his back at the front of the hall where everyone could see him, watching the students as they filed into the hall and took their seats on the bleachers.

The hall was almost full when Kat's group turned up. Kat scanned the students' faces around her, trying to find Jack, as she climbed the steps to her form's seats. Kat took her seat, and she leaned to her left to speak to Ben. He was still standing and had turned a ghastly grey colour, sweating and not taking his eyes off the guards standing at the end of the hall.

"Ben," Kat whispered gently, "Are you alright?" She pulled him down into his seat, but he continued to stare at the guards.

The assembly started, and a short video was played for the audience. The main topics were how to spot a deviant, report a deviant, and what to do if someone you love turns out to be a deviant. The students were encouraged to report anything suspicious; just a gut instinct would be enough to open a case for consideration, provided others were willing to put in official statements. However, full-scale investigations would only be launched upon legitimate proof being given.

Ben was having a tough time concentrating. He couldn't tear his eyes away from one of the guards. He recognised him as one of the guards who regularly escorted him to and from places of torture. This man had laughed at him, mocked him and even beat him whilst he was in custody. Ben's mouth had dried up, and he was having difficulty hearing the man in the black suit. The guard was scanning the audience, his eyes scanning across each row of students. His eyes met with Ben's for a split second, Ben felt an uncontrollable, sudden surge in hatred for him. The guard did not seem to recognise him and continued to scan the crowd.

"Sorry, ladies and gentlemen, we seem to be having a problem with the rest of the video," Ben heard the man in the black suit say as his attention came back to the sports hall.
